i agree with rob on that..... it becomes a good bio media not great but better then nothing. i have the same filter all i do is clean the sponge. what size of tank are you using this for?

Petco sells the sponges and charcoal inserts. You can also save a few dollars by prying the Charcoal basket open where the lid meets the case and refilling it with your own Charcoal.
