You buy it at the store with a piece of slate screwed into the wood so that it sinks am i correct? If you take it off it will just float? right?

Haha thanks. So I have seen people with horizontally placed pieces of wood. How is that possible? or is it done the same way.

The slate is put on the driftwood sold in the LFS to make the driftwood stay under water while it water logs. If you prep the driftwood (a good boil, then soaks) it will water log without the slate. I also used large rocks to hold my driftwood down until it water logged. The slate is fine, but IME it makes it more challenging to orient the wood the way you would like it in the tank.

it would be good to boil it for a while to avoid any thing infecting the tank. Also it would sink on its own after that. make sure you cool it rapidly after boiling it for around 15 minutes. Did the same for the 2.5 foot driftwood I found in a river and it hasnt given me any problems since in the tank, this includes tannin issues.
