So I got a new tank and put some assorted Gouramis in there, including three dwarfs. One (presumably male) has grown and developed the most amazing colours, but now I suppose the testosterone has kicked in and is chasing almost every fish. I have a spare tank with some normal guppies in it that I'm gonna put him in. But the question is will he be able to survive if the temp. is only 72-73? If he can't I'll have to get a new heater.

most tropical fish can live in water as low as 70. however they do prefer warmer water around 78. gouramis are territorial so the "fighting" is normal, i wouldnt worry to much about it. how big is your tank?

only 10gal. Is it possible he is just a little, well "randy"? I have 7 fish in there, including himself. 6 of which are gouramis.

honestly i would either get another 10 gallon to split them up or just sell or trade some back to your LFS. for a 10 g its overstocked, that will definately contribute to thier aggression. if they dont have a territory to claim to themselves they will fight over it. 3 would be a good number (1 male 2 females) for your 10. 4 is pushing it but if you keep up with water changes would work.

allright, I spose I'll split them up then. So 73 degrees would be allright for them? Also should I keep the same species together or apart?

Thanks for your help.

well fish can live in lower temps but thier matabolism slows down along with thier overall movement. i not exactly positive on any ill effects of living in lower temps so i would wait untill somebody else can give a little more info on that. are you trying to breed them? i would stick with the same species in the same tank but if you still notice alot (there will always be some) aggression then just try switching them around a bit. make sure to acclimate the fish to the colder temp. before you put them in the other tank so they dont go into shock from the dramatic temp change. just put each fish in a seperate bag and float it at teh top of the water for about 20 min.

thanks mate. in retrospect the tank was getting dirty very quickly...

It could live in 72 degrees, but 76-78 is much better.

As for the aggression, male gouramis will fight each other, it is best to have only one male.

Get a new heater...78-80 degrees would be good. At low temperatures it is much harder for a tropical fish’s immune system to work properly.

yeah thats what i was thinking, thier immune system will be weak and they will be more suseptable to diseases.

you can get a fairly cheap heater off ebay.
