Dwarf Gouramis

Hi,

Well i finally found out what killed the last female - one of my male gouramis. He's took another one out tonight and she is currently pretty ill in my hospital tank. I heard a loud splash and saw the female suddenly sink to the bottom, closly followed by the male. All themales and females tend to chase each another around the tank (not any of the other fish) but usually one is fast enough to get out of the others way but I'm not sure if she was in the wrong place and the wrong time and just not fast enough to get out of his way.

I'm just worried about my other 2 females now - as anyone got any suggestions?

Would adding more fish now make a difference??

I had guppys many moons ago and one male guppy killed his tank mate. So I got some more females but he took them out one by one. :sad:

Is it not possible to keep single male dwarf gouramies?

In my experience, dwarf gouramies are not friendly fish. They've been the "jerk of the tank".

Yep, from my experience the dwarf gourami should not be classified as a "community" fish. I've had males beat the crap out of eachother and other fish.

Interesting. I've had more problems with male three-spot gouramis than dwarf gouramis.

my male honey gourami will chase after the tetras if they get too close to him, but he's never really pursued the threat. no damage done to the tetras.

I watch my Dwarf Gourami in the tank, and most of the time, he wanders around, checking stuff out and keeping to himself. Usually near the top at the back amongst the Vallis, where no other fish tend to hang out anyway.

Occasionally he'll dart at one of the Serpaes or the loach, but never pursues it further.

The Serpae tetras on the other hand... veryy terrotorial with each other, one in particular seems to like his spot in the tank and chases any other fish away. (except the Gourami .. LOL)

My Dwarf Gourami is very peaceful to his/her tankmates - but I also don't have any other Gourami's in there and he/she is the biggest fish in the tank...not to take the thread over, but can you tell me how to tell if a fish is male or female?

thanks for your comments. I'm going to watch what happens and then probably take the male back to the shop. I originally had him in a smaller tank a while ago and he took out one of my glowlight tetras then, so we then decided to put him in the bigger tank - where he's now took out 2 females.

My male gouramis are a wonderful orange and blue striped colour while the females tend to be plain colour (mine are a pale bluey/white colour).
