Dwarf Puffer question

Hi, I just bought a male dwarf puffer two days ago. He is doing good, but I really want a pair of them for some reason as he seems a little lonely. Would you guys reccommend that I also get a female or would he better better by himself?

He's currently in a 20 gallon planted jungle with other fish (dwarf gourami, 6 cardinals, cherry shrimp, and 2 otos)
And yes I have researched them and many people said they are fine in a community tank, and the place I bought him from had 6 of them in a tank with other fish (guppies, knife fish, etc...) for a couple months and the owner said all the puffers get a long and are not at all aggressive, so please no comments about compatibility.

You would probably be better off going with a female if you get another. Two males may get aggressive toward one another if there is not adequate space for territories. Good luck with them... DPs rule!

well, you dont want a comment about compatibility, so i wont give you my opinion there,


but i will urge you not to get another puffer.... when you are more receptive to advice, let me know and i'll tell you why.

most of the time compatability isn't a matter of them being mean it is 80% of the time that they are too shy to fend for themselves in that they are frightened by the other fish,.. some times too scared to eat so watch him very close and make sure he is eating,...
they get weak real fast and go down hill even faster...
if he is lonely he will feel better in his own tank,.. if another m/f is put in there there is a chance he will fight it to take out his scaredness out on either m/f... i had a male that fought 3 females and only liked the 4th, so you can't tell what the will do..

forgive me for the don't go there thing but just wanted you to know what i've went thru having them for a few years,.. ok?
 
this happened to our puffer and we were afraid to put any tankmates in there but when Petsmart was closing them out they had two juvenile dps left and I rescued them. I put a tank divider in for a few weeks then removed it and they've all done fine. I know this may not be the case all the time but ours have done very well.
 
you just have to be very watchful so that there isn't any bulling,..

i've have over 8 different ones and 80-90 percent they are fine or scared but there are some out there that are viscous
i had one it was a female and very small, must of had the Napoleon complex.... she would chase even the big males around and bite them killed one male, grabbed him and shook him like a dog and a toy, i felt bad but it wasfunny atthe time,
then, most others just swim up and show their belly to swish them away and not bite..
but the biters leave deadly wounds and its a terrible way for them to die, you really cant do much i treated him for a long while but in the end he still died,.. so really watch them and they might be fine.. but be ready to move them out if necessary. also with your original one also,.. if it gets picked on by the other fish..
