Dwarf Puffer

Here's my 2 cents...

My personal experience with DPs is that they will not get along with other fish very well (or perhaps, I didn't find the species they do get along with). They'll nip like crazy. I tried the community tank idea and... that's the reason why I now own a DP species tank. :)

But just like Bettas, it could be that there are different DP personalities.

They do love little snails... and they also looooove ghost shrimp. So if you have ghost shrimp in your tank, and you'd like to keep them... consider a DP tank. :)

I'd wholeheartedly recommend the DPs... they're ALOT of fun!

it's a great resource for Dwarf Puffers. We have 2 in a 10 gallon with a couple of ghost shrimp, very fun to watch. Scared the hell out of me yesterday though. The slightly bigger one attacked the little one and the little one puffed up :( I just ordered a low light plant package from aquariumgarden.com to try and get their habitat a little more natural looking.

If you have bought any aquatic plants lately or plan to put live plants in the puffer tank it is likely that snails will accompany some of the plants you buy. That is how we've gotten all ours and they are in another tank but we plan to harvest the young as they multiply to feed to our DPs when they arrive.

Yep, it's very easy to "breed" snails.

Just goto your local LFS and get some, toss them in one of those small beta bowls with some food, change out the water regularly, and you'll have a bunch of snails in no time :D

Ya I was going to make it a species tank. So what if I get like 3 DP's a couple of live plants, some ghost shrimp, and snails.

Three could work out OK unless you have 2 or more males in that mix. Provide lots of plants ,driftwood, java moss, anything that clutters up the tank and breaks up lines of sight so they don't encounter each other constantly.

Ya I planned on 1 male and 2 females. Would an aquaclear 30 do the job for filtration?

The thing with them is they need good filtration but little current. I keep a bunch of ghost shrimp in with mine so they could eat them if they wanted but they usually don't pay much attention to the shrimp. All DPs are different and maybe I lucked out with 7 that couldn't care less about the other fish in the tank. The snails these guys can eat have to be really small or else you will just end up with empty snail shells all over your substrate.
I have 7 DPs together 5 males and 2 females. One male and female have paired and I've raised one fry to juvenile and its a she. All those males and they couldn't care less about each other.
