:iagree:Some aquarists add a small amount of aquarium salt, say one teaspoon per 10 gallons to the water in order to help prevent ich and keep the fins healthy. I think this is what they meant as conditioning salt. This small amount should not harm DPs or any other freshwater fish.
I do not add salt to my tanks however. Once you start adding stuff to the tank you can get into trouble over time. Best to keep that water as pure as possible IMO.
DPs are strictly FW fish & would die very quickly in SW. You must have been seeing juvie green spotted puffers. I killed my 1st DPs by forcing them into low-end BW.Dwarf puffers I believe are supposed to be brackish water. However, they are one of those fish that are easily weened into freshwater AND saltwater.
Yeah, as the above poster stated, dwarf puffers are strictly freshwater. I have never seen them in Wal-Mart, but I have seen them in PetSmart, and the tag says nothing about being brackish, or needing salt for that matter. Wal-Mart regularly carries the green spotted puffers, though, which are brackish. Also, PetSmart does not and has never salted their systems with marine salt.. The specific gravity should not have been affected by aquarium salt.. perhaps you were in PETCO.Dwarf puffers I believe are supposed to be brackish water. However, they are one of those fish that are easily weened into freshwater AND saltwater. My lfs successfully weened a batch into saltwater over a period of a month or so. I've also seen them at wal-mart and petsmart. I asked the employees at both stores what type of water they are in because I noticed the label in both stores said brackish. The wal-mart tank was pure freshwater with no aquarium salt while the petsmart tank was indeed brackish, he showed me with a hydrometer.
DPs are strictly FW fish & would die within a few days in SW. You musht have been seeing juvie green spotted puffers. I killed my 1st ones by putting them into low-end BW.
