The general rule that I have heard is that the snail is supposed to be aprox. the size of the puffers eye......well the Dwarf Puffer is so small that my question is.......

Are there snails small enough that they would be able to eat? or are we talking baby snails for the dwarf puffers?

Thanks for the help!

Yes, there are snails that small. I go to the local Petsmart to get snails for my F-8 and I get a variety of snail sizes.
The eye thing is a good suggestion but not the rule as far as the fish goes. Mine prefers the ones that are eyeball size and smaller but he will not reject the larger ones. He usually does not eat them immediately. He lets them sink to the bottom and then enjoys them at his own pace. Thje smaller ones are devoured the second they hit the water.
You could also feed them ghost shrimp since they are crunchy also.
I am guessing that you posted here becasue this is where the puffer owners are, because the dwarfs are not a brackish species. They like their water fresh.

thanks for the info.....

i posed here because this is where all the puffer stuff gets posted....

MOst dwarf puffers don't crack the shell of a snail but pull it out of the shell. Get ahodl of some pond snails and common rams horn snails and start breeding them. I use a bucket with some plants and I throw in some fish food or veggies. Gravel will help too. The snails will breed fast if there is lots of good food, and a healthy diet will mean better food for the puffers. I then usually use a piece of lettuce to remove snails. Set it in at night and it should be covered in snails in the morning. Add the appropriate amount if snails to the puffer tank.

Sorry to take your thread but I have a quick question. Can dwarf puffers live with livebears?

I am about 75% through cycling a new 10g tank for 3 dwarf puffers so i might be wrong, but from my research i would have to say no.

They are considered agressive and territorial fish. it would probably make just about any live bearer's finless. they also seem to exibit strong personalities, so you might get a evil demon or a sweet angel or somewhere in between. Even though you might seem to have a peaceful one, like sigfreid and roy's white lion (tiger? sorry cant remember) no matter how close and how trained the animal is, its still wild and could rip your (or your livebearer's) throat out in the blink of an eye.

But, now on to my real questionl. How many snails (and how big) should I feed them a day? I have a 5 gallon tank dedicated to breeding snails. (mostly, SUPPOSED to be my quarantene tank, buy my livebearer's tank is overflowing and i don't see me getting any more fish for that tank any time soon) i figure i have several hundred in the ~1/8" range now. my cycling tank is also crawling with snails.

Thanks

This is exactly the information I was looking for. My puffers have been eating freeze dried brine shrimp and they look really hungry. I haven't been able to find any snails small enough (smallest being about 1 + 1/2 inches). My LFS never has any Ghost Shrimp in stock. If I do get Ghost Shrimp can I put some n the tank with the puffers and they'll just eat them when they're hungry ? And also call me ignorant but I Don't know what a livebear is, but I've had 3 Clown Loaches, 1 Pleco and 2 Dwarf Puffers for over 3 weeks. They don't bother each other at all. One of the Puffers nipped at the Pleco once and he (Pleco) turned around like "Don't try that again" and he hasn't. Everybody Happy.
