Dying betta

yeah. . . . maybe if it had been caught sooner and had some symptoms that would point to a specific infection or cause, but as is, looks lke there's nothing much left to do. i agree that freezing is inhumane, but putting the fish from tropical temps into ice-cold water shocks the system and is immediate. i came across a website from a university laboratory that detailed the ways they euthanised fish used in their experiments. the cold water, clove oil, or CO2 were all the top choices for quickness of death and little to no suffering.

Now that I think about it more personally, I know I wouldn't be able to kill one of my bettas. Even if it was humanely. Good luck, and if you can, please humanely euthanize him. Might want to visit the site Jessu provided for you first though.

The betta expired last night.....

But, now I am afraid to replace him, because if this was an infection of some sort, I dont want to put another betta through it. I guess if it was just a tumor or something, mabye its fish specific....but i dont know :help:

i am sorry to hear that. if you are concerned about bad water, tear down the tank, wash out everything with either a bleach/water or vinegar/water solution. this should kill any bacteria (including the good ones unfortunately) allowing you to start over again safely.

If your other fish in that tank are fine, don't worry too much.

Bettas are prone to tumors. These are not contagious to other fish or other bettas. Kind of like with cancer in humans. You're not going to catch cancer from being in the same room as a cancer patient or even from sharing the same toothbrush (not that you should).

I am really sorry to hear the he passed away.
Clean out the whole tank if you are going to get more fishies. Replace the gravel or clean it out really throughly and change the water 100%.

Ya its a 55 gallon tank that houses a bunch of guppies and platys too, and i dont have another tank to put them in to tear this one down, and it has sand mixed with laterite as opposed to gravel substrate, which in my opinion, makes it harder to clean and wash :mad2:

Mmm.. maybe replace 80% of the water so the fish have a tiny bit of room to swim around so they are still covered with a bit of water, just enough to cover them though.
