AH!!! my biggest goby is dying! my tiger barb has picked the topfin off my goby and was chewing on the others so im getting rid of the barb. well that large open wound across his back got infected. i havnt got rid of the barb yet but i have taken the goby out of the tank and put him in a 4 gallon tub as a quarentine. i have a submersible fiter in there and an airstone and a hood so he cant jump out. im also medicating the water with some tablets that cure all types of fungus and finrot. ill also be medicating the water to get his slime coat back up and regenerate his fins back. how long should he be quarentined and is he in the right living conditions.

Hard to say without knowing exactly what meds you are using.

I would say step one, quarantine, so good job there. Is the filter established ? If not get some of your substrate from the tank into the QT and squeeze out an established filter into the QT filter.

Maintain his water at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, nitrate as low as you can go...daily water change is good.

Depending on how bad the infection I'd have given him a couple days on that before medicating if it was not resolving. Its unlikely to be a fungal problem...more likely bacteria...pics might help...if it is bacteria you want something like maracyn or maracyn 2 if available - broad spectrum antibiotic.

Don't mix meds. What exactly do you have available to you ? Can you post a pic ?

um a pic of the goby is a no-can-do my camera is crap and you cant tell what it is. i the meds i can take a pic of. the filter has been in my 55 gallon for the last 3 months. the meds are Fungus Clear Tank Buddies by Jungle, and the stuff for his slime coat is AquaSafe by Tetra

If the wound is showing no signs of infection, I'd be inclined to leave the meds...you've got nothing to treat for as yet. Pristine water is his best bet for now. Hopefully you won't have to treat. If you have meds in...I'd do large water change and not dose again until I knew whether I had to/what it was I was medicating.

well he has some sort of stuff on him bcuz his bottom lip has white crap growing on it and the fins all except for the fin along the bottom of his body are covered in the same looking white crap. hes acting really strange and doesnt have much to any interest at all in eatin. i dont know why either. hes benn acting strange for a while now. before the only time i ever saw him was at night now hes out all hours of the day and refuses to go in caves, this contributed to him getting tore appart by the stupid tiger barb. before he would chase and bite fish that came near him(all except the plec) and npw he cowers in fear and runs from anything(even puny mollies lol) i keep him on a diet of bllodworms and algaediscs, algae more than bloodworms bcuz he loves algae, he will fight for it and only eats bloodworms when he wants to. now he barly eats algae at all and only scavenges the bottom to eat leftover bloodworms.i havnt seem him eat in over a month hes not skinny to the point of death but hes the thinest ive ever seen him as apossed to being fat like he normally is. although before i never really saw him id rather him be hiding and not see him during the day than see him in the condition he is in now. and also i read that you can not tell gobies gender im almost positive the goby is a he bcuz he has a red spot that looks like a big red pimple at the end of where is organ sac is and right in front of where his bottom fin begins.

also sorry for any bad spelling i was typing in a hurry.

and also with him living in a four gallon box. how often should i change his water?

Your post is pretty hard to follow, but I would do a daily change on the four gallon minimum and work hard to diagnose his problems...online searches...try and get pic up here etc.

Is this the violet goby in your avatar? If you had it with tiger barbs, I am assuming you were keeping it in freshwater. They should really be in brackish water long term - keeping them in freshwater is possible but it puts a lot of extra stress on their osmoregulatory system and will shorten their life. The brackish water might also help stave off infection.

Agree'd, they are brackish fish and easily get infections and tumors in FW. They look mean but are very peaceful, fin nippers are a big no no.

That being said, what temp are you keeping the 4 gallons at? Add a little bit of aquarium salt and raise the temp to help him heal faster. And definitely look into going brackish for those guys, my longest successful VG in FW was about 6 months, in brackish I had a couple for almost 3 years before I did away with the brackish water tank.

yeah i try to avoid salt but if thats what it will take to get him back up. now the big tank im not gonna salt. i just cant afford all that salt for my tank. the stuff on him has to be some kind of fungus bcuz its white fuzzy lookin stuff on his body. ill see what i can find on it. also hes quit eating again. i checked on my other goby(only comes out at night now) and hes very active swims alot when lights are out and is a food hog/
