I dropped in to Aquarium Services yesterday and was told that the big Eheim with everything I need (disconnect hoses, media, etc.) would run me about $1009 CDN + 15% tax. ...OUCH!

Click here to see the E-bay Eheim 2260 deal.

This deal seams to be considerably better, but I realize it is not all inclusive. Take a look at what the seller lists. Is it all there but for the media? Is media something I can substitute with DIY stuff?

Can someone give me $1150 CDN? :D

It looks like everything is there... and the price of $249.99 is identical (in US $$) to what That Pet Place is charging. Their descriptions says "The filter comes complete with a safety hose-connection system to stop separation and 7 foot of tubing, suction cups, intake tube with strainer, return spray bar, and line elbows. "

Sounds to me like your Canadian source is making a bit of a profit... I'd probably consider the Ebay seller, unless one of the big online houses (Big Al's maybe) will ship to Canada. (Actually, I just checked and Big Al's has the very same filter for $529.99 Canadian; doesn't include media, either. See http://www.bigalsonline.ca/catalog/product.xml?product_id=22027&category_id=1711&pcid1=2885)

If I were you, I'd be buing online. It's good to support your LFS, but not at a 200% or more markup...

HTH,
Jim

eheims do not come with media. those are the cliassic though, not as easy to work with but huge and powerful.

Most of the time lfs are more expensive than petsmart, petco and whatever. I still like to support smaller local buisnesses as much as possible.

i do too but not when they charge a hundred dollars for a powerfilter i can get off big als for 29 bucks.

the link worked for me, are you gonna get it? i havent seen those around lately so im not sure how much they run now. but like i said those things are powerful. the cannister is also huge so you can put anything you want into it. i would use lavarocks and ceramic rings cause those are pretty cheap get the genric brands to save money. or use a lot of mech. filtration and use the cell pore stuff for bio.
