Easiest beginner fish?

Oops, touched a nerve. I guess I have to agree to disagree and carry on.

I'd suggest the fish that I started out with as a kid, which were platies. They come in a variety of colors, are very hardy and easy to care for, and also easy to breed if that's something you'd like to try.

jaylin, bettas do benefit from having space to swim around, and while arguably they may live long lives in a stillwater container with no filtration at all, it's less ideal than a larger quantity of water that is filtered. Anabantids are masters of making the best out of a bad situation; a "betta vase" being just that. They can survive with dissolved oxygen levels that would prove fatal for many other fish, and are more tolerant than some with respect to ammonia toxicity, but nitrogenous waste is still damaging to them.

If you change the vase water daily, or provide enough plants that ammonia is utilized as fast as it is produced, a betta may live the full term of its life. One advantage to a filter in this case is that once cycled, you're assured that there will be a minimum of acutely toxic waste building up in your betta's habitat. Consider also how quickly things can go bad in a pint of water. A filter makes things easier on owner and fish alike in the long run.

However, when you get to a more personal level, it's difficult to appreciate a fish that has little room to do more than sit still or make tight circles in a tiny vase.

How typically ignorant. If you don't want to answer a question, then don't.

Thanks for the intellegent and un-snappy reply Raskolnikov.

I don't disagree with you. All my betta's now have filtration, but I don't think it's so terribly wrong to keep a betta in a vase with a live plant. I had one live very happily that way for 6 years before he died. He was quite decorative. I never had a problem appreciating him.

grrr

bettas in a vase are cruel .you could live in a 5 by 8 cell but do you think that you would be happy no.so lets all give our beautifull bettas the home and respect thay deserve.

Definately not neons. White clouds are great. Personally I think my ideal beginer setup for a ten gallon starter tank would be a Betta maybe 2 corries. I love my setup and it's easy to care for both. Just add a small filter and a heater and you're good to go with those two.
You can find both at any LFS and you most likely won't have to deal with any deseases other then Ich. Good luck and welcome to the adiction.

LOL I have three that I've had for 6 months. Now consider that's out of 20 that I've bought in the last year and a half. One out of eight survived an out break of neon tetra desease after afew months of him being clean I bought three more. One died maybe 2-3 months ago but the remaining three are doing great. Just NOT a beginer fish. Tetras in general really aren't good beginer fish that's just my opinion but the neon tetras AREN'T for sure.
