My 5# tank is about 6" in diameter & 15" tall. That's a very rough estimate. You can get 2.5# tanks. As for being dangerous I was a bit worried about that as well, but every store that sells fountain drinks has them and I'm a heck of a lot more careful about these things than they are... i'm sure of that.
