Uh, what does a hamburger from McDonalds have to do with cows?

I care about animals... and I have seen footage of just how gruesome it is in slaughter houses. It made me sick to my stomach. I came close to putting my fist through my monitor when I saw what some @$$%&!# did to a dog in that same video. Unfortunately, eating meat is one thing which I will never be able to give up. It is part of the cycle of life. Have you ever watched a lion take down a gazelle? It is very gruesome, but hey, that's how the food chain works. I'd like to quote another AC member, and I apologize for not being able to remember who it was... "I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat salad." I truly do respect the wishes of others though... by all means, I will never try to force someone who doesn't want to eat meat to do so. My ex wouldn't eat beef, pork, turkey, or fish. She only ate chicken. And not all that often either. We had her over for dinner, and my family was doing hamburgers. My folks made some chicken too, and we were all happy. :-)

Not to get into the slaughter house debate... but here is my experience. I spent 5 years inspecting small state meat plants. I too have seen the horrific videos, and I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like that. At least at the small level, plants were very conciencious about doing their jobs in a clean, sanitary, and humane manner. Any animals that were terrified at the slaughter floor (they were already terrified just being trucked there) was because they were raised with out confinement or any human interaction. They didn't seem no even notice the sight or smell of blood.

It was my job as an inspector to make sure that all regulations were followed. All animals are required to be rendered insensible to pain befire being handled in any way. I also checked lymph nodes and organs in each animal to ensure it was healthy. If I had any issues, I would call a veterinarian.

I urge people to see what they are eating and where it was produced. (Same as with fruits and veggies - local is best) No plant should be afraid to let you in unless they have something to hide.

Now to the McDs debate... the bigger issue with all large plants is what is left on. It is inevitable that some fecal materal is going to accidently end up on the carcass. It is just a fact of life. That is where E coli comes from. The small plants are required to trim all visable contamination, wash the carcass, and then spray it with an orgainc acid spray (like vinegar) to lower the pH on the exterior of the carcass to prevent growth of any remaining bacteria. The large plants don't have "time" to trim every carcass. They steam vacuum the exterior of the carcasses to kill and suck off bacteria, hopefully rendering the bacteria dead. I guess I prefer to just have it removed, not vacuumed.

The job was an educational experience. I did it for 5 years, and survived. I am happy to report I have now moved on to inspecting different things.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to go overboard.... I just wanted to share that despite the fact that it is horriffic, it is a fact of life. And most of the sensational stories you hear are isolated cases. (and I don't eat at MCDs and I don't buy meat at Walmart.)

Hmm, a salad does sound good for lunch today. But with spinach and lettuce recalls what is safe?

you know, i'm not really a vegitarian because I care for animals, I just don't like eating meat. i've never been keen on meat.I was almost born a vegitarian, and it took me a while t realize what i really was. like, when i was 5, I liked the plant-eating sauropods when every other boy else liked t- rexs. :D

Ya me too. My whole family (carnivores) thought I was crazy, they still do I think. lol Although our family did manage to produce another vegetarian so I'm not alone now. :)
