Eat Those Cows !!

I respect that. I truly wish I was more like you... sometimes I think our culture is too selfish with eating what is good not what is good for the universe.

Are you both strict vegans or do you eat dairy and eggs? Do you have a hard time eating out?

And I have to ask... do you eat jello? Is it common knowledge in this world how awful gelatin is?

nope, I could NEVER, EVER
not eat cheese! I worship it! and I do eat eggs, though I never eat raw ones.... but I always make sure both are organic, and that my cheese is rennet free. I don't eat gelatin. and you were a beef inspector, right? yes, they actually don't treat cows half bad... but they are still injected with growth hormones. most of the physical crulety comes into play, or so i've heard. in the rasing of chickens.

oops, posted twice.

Yeah, I did check the health of animals, but you can't see the affects of pushing growth hormones and antibiotics at animals. Truly going to be a BIG problem in the future. Organic is a good option if you can't raise it or buy it direct from the farm. They not only have chemical and antibiotic rules to follow, each animal must have so much space, and the ability to get outside to pasture. Really they just make animals be like animals not like prisoners.

I agree... I could live with out meat, but cheese is a different story. But my hubby doesn't eat anything green. By the time I make supper for him, I might as well eat it myself as well.

Thanks!
Jennie

One of my philosophy profs has lectured on many occasions about this type of thing. Through having him for about 4 different classes I have learned tremendeous amounts about Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who grew up with big dreams. This Link has tons of info about humane slaughter houses and the standards that she has set worldwide. Lots of good info. :dance2:

So only 'ovo-lacto' vegetarian, not vegan?

Depends on where you get your cows...most are NOT injected with any hormones.

most of the physical crulety comes into play, or so i've heard. in the rasing of chickens.

So you have heard...unfortunately, you cannot believe all you hear. Certainly, there are some unpleasant 'battery' type farms, but all the ones I have been to were quite good.

I was ovo-lacto vegetarian for 2 years, and have eaten occasional poultry and fish (and invertebrates) for the past 8 years...prior to that, pretty much anything. Now my current diet choices are based on eating more healthily (humans are really not designed to eat much meat, and red meats are the least healthy of the lot, even if they are grain-fed/free-range organic), but that does not mean that I think that eating a hamburger is disgusting, or that I will never eat red meat again.

One problem that can occur with vegetarian is that after a couple of years, they lose the ability to produce the enzymes required to digest meats, so should they ever wish or need to eat meat in the future (imagine being stranded somewhere with only animal protein as a food supply), they will go through weeks of hell (vomiting and diarrhea) before their body relearns to produce the correct enzymes.

Ah, I remember her...she is the one that discovered that squeezing herself in a cattle squeeze calmed herself (an interesting discovery for autism researchers).

Yup, thats her!! There is tons of interesting info on her out there, both related to slaughter houses and autism. Interestingly enough she couldn't stand to be hugged or loved on by her parents as a young child but found the squeezing to be quite soothing. Autism is something that interests me a lot, also scares the hell out of me, being about that age where having kids is on my mind!! ;)

wouldn't eating dairy products and eggs require those enzymes? and tortis.. no matter where you go, there are edible plants. (leaving out the polar regions, of course.) if I was stuck on a desert island, chances are 1 out of 2 there would be a palm of some sort, in fact, there is little chance of any large animals living on the island, at least not large enough to be worth eating.

I live for cheese too. lol I eat eggs, but I'm not too enthuiastic about it. I used to work at an egg production factory... Oh the stories I could tell you. *Eggs are really Liquid chickens* (someone's avatar from awhile back) - saw that first hand. *shudder*

Its rare, but I have/will eat some sea food, chicken or Turkey. Does not happed too often though. Like maybe once or twice I year, even then its 'iffy'. I gag easily. lol
