eaters of algae

okey dokey...get rid of the CAE (he really is too aggressive) and try to find out whats wrong to make crazy algae grow.

ya know...i would almost swear that he was harvesting the algae anyway. all the places he liked to eat the algae would grow. it only grew on the rock until he came and started eating off the rock, then it got crazy so he moved to the other rocks and it started growing there...then his fave spot was the filter uptake and it started growing there, then he started grazing the tubers and it started growing there...we just should have never replaced the pleco.

anyone want an algae farming, highly aggressive CAE? (lol)

LOL... a double agent CAE. Check out the plant forums, there's alot of good algae advice there and best of luck to you!

After you get rid of the CAE, maybe some nerite snails? I hear they're pretty good at algae removal. Also, the brushfish MG showed is probably the best algae eater for any sized tank :p:

if you have BBA (black brush/black beard algae), get some prime. put it in a little spraybottle, take your banana plant out of the water, and spray the prime all over the algae. you shouldn't have to use much. then put your plant back. the algae will turn red over a couple hours or faster and then it will die. while this will not prevent it from coming back, it will give you time to figure out what is causing it so that you can prevent it.

i don't know what prime is...and we have a fairly chemical free household...(i'm preggo and don't want to touch anything all that chemically anyway) but the rock that was the biggest problem has been soaking in a solution of grapefruit seed extract and water for about 3 days now and either today or tomorrow i'll start rinsing it. it killed off the algae on the rock, now i've just got to scrub the strands off. we're getting rid of the CAE this weekend and not replacing it with anything. we also did a water change and have been leaving the light off and i trimmed off with scissors any of the algae that was growing on the plant. I'm hoping cutting back on feeding and light will just kill it (without killing the bananas). we're also going to get a water test kit since all we have now is a ph test kit and although that usually comes out alright, we know its not the only thing we can test for, so...

if prime is not too bad of a chemical we'll think about picking some of that up too...but we're pretty picky.

prime is hydrogen sulfide. . . pretty bad as far as you don't want to breathe it in. what are you currently using as a dechlorinator? you should get tests for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, as the presence/overabundance of these things just feeds algae.
