I have one of these in my 55G, and about a week ago I noticed a single long stem growing out of the middle of it. At first I thought it was a piece of hygro that had come out of the substrate, lost its leaves, and got caught on the sword plant. So I went to pull on it and noticed it was attached.

Over the weekend I noticed that it has grown considerably and is closing in on the top of the tank, bearing in mind that the plant is probably no taller than 6-8" its a pretty long looking stem.

Anyone have any idea what this is? at the moment there is nothing coming off of it.

Thanks.

Its a runner. It will grow all the way to the surface and produce baby plants and flowers

Great, I kinda hoped it might produce some flowers and new plants. Its a neat looking compact sword, will be nice to have more than one.

It is probably a fower which is usless (I just pinch it off). My sword reproduce by runners.

OK, so the first one of these that I had, I pinched off the stem before it had a chance to do anything. Well, now it has grown another, that has leaves growing off of it at a couple different points.

Are these baby swords? how big should I let them get before planting them? I think the biggest has leaves that are closing in on an inch. How do I get them off the stem? The mother plant is looking shabby, and I am trying to rescape my tank by removing things like hygro, and instead planting more swords and crypts. If I can get some of these planted it will help me along nicely!

Basically, the runner gets nodes- at each node one of two results occur. If the node is at the surface and exposed to air, it will become a flower. If it is submerged, it becomes a baby plant.

The baby will put out roots. once there is a decent root mass on the top plant, you can cut it off and plant it. Leave a small piece of the runner woth the baby and then prune back the runned down to the next node/baby plant. Plant the baby :-)

Great, thanks. I can clearly see the nodes on the runner, and I think I have at least 2 plants that I should be able to get off of the runner soon then, no roots yet, but definitely some good leaf growth.
