ECO-COMPLETE OR FLOURITE???

I just have a quick question for you guys....

Eco-Complete and Flourite are both safe for FW Shrimp, right???

I do not see why not. Should be safe with any "water" creature.
 
I think I am just going to go with eco-complete gravel and buy 7 bags from PETCO.
They are having a sale with free shipping on orders over $40, and the bags of eco-complete cost only $16.99. REALLY GOOD DEAL!!!

If I want sand later on, I will buy flourite sand to replace the eco complete in 3 years because by that time, the eco complete plant beneficial part will have worn off.

I have seen/heard of reviews in which the nutrients in eco-complete wear out. Usually 3+ years after you buy it. If it does not lose its nutrients, then that is great!!!
 
No, that's not quite what I meant. Eco "comes with" some mineral/bacteria "stuff" in the liquid in the bag. It doesn't last all that long (months) or replace the need for ferts. It does hold onto ferts & keep them available at the roots.

Some substrates do indeed 'wear out" ie break down into mud, other like sand are inert & don't wear out.
 
CEC - Cation Exchange Capacity
It's basically how effective the substrate is at adsorbing positively charged nutrients, hence it serves as a nutrient storage. Sand has a low CEC, substrate like Flourite or Eco have a high CEC.

So does eco-complete or flourite wear out at all?
 
I am just getting eco-complete. Probably 7-8 bags which will total 140-160 LBS

I will also add about 20-40 lbs of my own normal fine black gravel that I have sitting in my garage. :)

I am planning to slope a lot, and make sort of cliffs with rockwork/rocks, and cover them with gravel, and plant!!!
