I've been trying to buy some Eco-Complete Substrate for a 10G and possibly a 55G which I plan to turn into planted tanks. But as all of us I alwaysreluctant to just give my money away without getting something worthy. So I did some research here online because my LFS is out of the question ($26.99 per bag). Here are 2 prices which I found for a 20lbs Eco-Complete Substrate bag.
www.DrsFosterSmith.com =$21.99

www.BigAlsOnline.com = $14.99
http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=20557&category_id=3145&pcid1=3349

I was wondering why their prices are so different? Does anybody know?

Well Big Al's adds a "heavy item" charge on top of the shipping charge I know because that is what I ended up ordering to for my 55 I'm getting ready to set up. I was going to go with Florite because I heard so much about it here but when I went to Big Al's the eco-complete was on sale (that's why it's cheaper) not sure what the reg. price was though.
Not sure about Drs foster smith though, they may just charge the regular shipping
cost.

Just went to my confirmation email invoice and the shipping was 7.45, oversized item charge was 7.49, now I ordered some florish excel, and a driftwood piece so that may of made the shipping a little more (not by much I wouldn't think).
Alway's remember the shipping charges at these places.

Good luck,

Yea, I always try to watch out for the shipping charges as they sometimes can be more expensive than the total price of the products you are buying.(I dunno who would make such deal).

That's why I emailed BigAlsOnline and asked them about the charges and their justifications. Still waiting for response.

Dr. Fosters did away with freight charges on subsrates (kind of). They've basically added them to the everyday price. Eco used to be around $17 a bag there until they did this a couple months ago. The price you see everywhere else is without freight. www.aquariumplant.com has it for $9.99 a bag advertised on their website plus $9.99 for shipping. You can have this pricematched at either www.bigalsonline.com or www.petsolutions.com and possibly save a little on the freight depending how far away it has to travel to get to you. I got mine from pet solutions for around $16 a bag shipped.

wow, amazing how prices move up and down

ummm both?

I can tell you in a day or two once I get mine...didn't think about it just assumed it was rock like florite, good questiom!!

I'm planning on a black sand bottom thats why I'm curious. I know Eco-Complete makes a sand but I'm not sure this is it or not. Heck I'm thinking I might go for it anyway. It looks like a really good choice for plants and the price is very nice at that site.
