EcoSphere's - what kind of shrimp are they?

is it just me or do they have a striking resemblance to RCS? Except for the fact that they're the miniature superheroes of the shrimp world, that is.

Southerndesert, I read your blog entries on the breeding experiment for these guys, how's that coming along?

My mom received an ecosphere as a gift a few years ago. They are pretty sad. They get a little bit of moss or algae in there that is supposed to produce enough o2 for them to breath. They do shrink with each molt because their bodies are consuming themselves to survive. They can actually tolerate a wide range of salinity but do live in a brackish environment.

EDIT: W00T for 1,000th post :)

I currently have two berried after a long wait....

congrats, stereo!!

My sister received one of these a few years ago and it lasted a good year and a half before it became kinda of gooky inside... kinda like there were diatoms forming. Not sure if she kept it in a too well lit area or not but it died soon after that... the algae lasted for a few months but not much longer.

Congrats on the pregnant shrimp!

If I were to raise them, does this mean I need a salt water tank? I'm a newbie with keeping fish in general. I only own 2 bettas in 2 tanks and nothing big with community fish or anything yet. I have NO experience with salt water tanks. I hope this tank would not be too 'advanced' if it's salt water. I am interested in starting an invert tank though. What kind of other equipment/needs do I need to raise them besides tank/filter/water conditioner/heater/thermometer/substrate. Someone mentioned something about gravity. What exactly is water gravity?

Well I want them to be healthy at the least but breeding would be pretty cool. What's is required from brackish water? It's a mixture of salt+fresh water from what I know. Does this mean I need to add salt to the water?

And what is the gravity of water? 1.014 or something? And how do I get achieve that.

boobie-make a post in the brakish section about starting your first brackish tank, do some googling and reading of stickies/articles :). You need marine salt and a hydrometer, if I remember correctly...but really, I might not, so go for it! It's probably really not as intimidating as it may seem at first, esp if so many other people have done it.
