Hi everyone. Just thought i'd join and find a place to get knowledgeable advice. I'm John. I make hot sauce, grow peppers, and now i want to grow some fish and aquatic plants.

What began as a new home for a betta has evolved into a full-on aquarium project. Got a small 5 gallon tank from Wallyworld, some equipment, some sciencey stuff in bottles, some starter fish (read: sacrificial feeder fish), and some plants. It's been about 2 weeks running now and doing well. Had my first real nitrite spike and PH spike which i am now combatting. One feeder fish (the runt) died a day ago, or rather i ended his suffering. I expected as much. I figure 2-3 more weeks and it'll be ready for "keeper" fish provided things go well. I'm a newbie with all this, so it's all trial and error for me.

Here is my current setup as of an hour ago. I'm not a photographer, but you get the idea.

And here's the betta we have affectionately named Alphonso.

As i said, i'm new to all of this. ANY and all help is appreciated.

in the 5.5 the plant with the white edges is not aquatic and you will want to remove it!!

Are you sure? I bought it from a reputable pet store. Dang. Now i'm confused. :help:

Hello and welcome from a fellow NJ resident! Many pet stores sell plants that aren't 100% aquatic...they will be fine for a short while and then start to rot. If you were closer to me (I live in Ocean county) I would hook you up with some free low light plants...I have way too many!

Dang. It looks cool and the fish love hiding in it. I'll leave it for now, but only because i don't feel like dealing with it.

I'll be planning a trip down to Ocean Township soon to hit up Tropiquarium. I know they have the right stuff there. The last time i bought stuff from them they were kind of elitist, but i don't say that as a bad thing. Just that i had no clue at all before going in. I'll be buying my fish there as well.

Can you NJ folks recommend a spot in Middlesex county anywhere? I've only lived here since last April and it's only now beginning to feel like home. So far all i've got is Petco.

Do you know where Animals n' Things is located? Route 1 woodbridge, they have a a decent selection of plants, that are aquatic.
I don't, but i can certainly check it out this week, maybe tomorrow. :thm:
