This may seem like a dumb question but me and my hubby were talking and we were wondering can you have an eel in an african cichlid tank? If so what kind? The tank size is 125g.
thank-you
there are no true freshwater eels. they're all brackish (meaning half saltwater half freshwater) many spiny eels (peacock eels, fire eels, tiretrack eels) can survive for some time in freshwater, but ultimately they belong in brackish water.
that being said, plenty of people keep them in freshwater and never move them to brackish. it greatly reduces their lifespan, though.
however, most spiny eels are very peaceful, which does not mix with african cichlids very well. and their long wiggly shape makes them look like lunch.
i dont know about bichirs, there might be some that could handle it. someone else here would be more knowledgeable about them.
there are freshwater eels(american eel) lives most of it's life in freshwater and migrates to the ocean to spawn.(some may live 15 years in freshwater before they migrate to spawn.)
your best bet is to try and study what you want to consider. and see if that species is appropriate and available.
not all eel or eel like species may bre available.
