My breeding angels have spawned on the filter intake and I'm worried that when the get moving, they may dislodge themselves and fall down past the intake and be sucked in.

Am I rightly concerned? and would the fuss of tying a stocking over the inlet upset the parents or dislodge the eggs?

sounds like it might do all that! dislodge the eggs and upset the parents, but those are small risks to take considering that if you did neither, when the eggs hatch the fry may be sucked up right away!

Not sure what a breeding slate is but there are several flat rocks and plants in the tank for them. It is a community tank but I am going to give it to them exclusively once I sort some bugs out of the new, improved community tank I have brewing. Then, I hope, they won't feel the need to go right into the corner of the tank to spawn.

This is a breeding slate, simply an upright piece of slate against the wall of hte tank for them to lay their eggs:
