Can egg shells be used as a source of calcium for the aquarium? Both for plants and inverts? Would it be safe for SW?

I remember my dad used to put crushed eggshells around his plants as a kind fertilizer, just as this document says.

Also, as a source of calcium I don't know if it can be used as we use crushed coral to raise KH.

Just wondering.

Hrm, I don't think crushed coal would supply a lot of calcium but it sure would produce awfully dark fish.

I have read that people use it as a source of calcium for snails but from what I remember it had mixed results. I think they were having trouble crushing it up into a powder that was small enough it wouldn't make the tank cloudy. I wonder if you were to just leave it as bigger pieces if it will have the same effect?

I use eggshells around my lavender to help counteract the local soil acidity. I have a dedicated blender for the garden, used mostly for eggshells and moss.

I would be a bit concerned with eggshells in the tank, as the protein coat on the inside can invite some nice fungi, along with being a small boost to the bioload, I would use either aragonite (slightly better solubility) or crushed coral. Either will provude both Ca++ & Mg++, along with CO3--/HCO3-.

Why would coral make Rainbows dark?
