yeah that was my original setup. spraybar all the way to left, intake all the way to right. Unfortunately that does not work for canister filters, it's making wierd noises because of the curve in the pipe so not enough water is flowing to it. The canister requires both in/out tubes to be completely straight going to/from the tank.
My eheim is set up that way. Spray bar on the left and intake on the right. Have it that way for 7 years now and not a single problem. You don't need the hose to be completely straight. You just don't want any kinks on it so that it restricts water flow. Air in the canister would also make for weird noises.

I have a 50 gallon and I beleive it's 36x18X20. I have two canisters filtering it. I have a fluval sitting towards the right side and the eheim sits towards the left of the tank.
My spraybar is on the left wall and intake in the back right corner. As far as noise I had to check to make sure its working so often I put a piece of naja grass over the bar so I could see the water movement. No noise whatsoever.
My tank is 18 inches wide and the spraybar fits perfectly. I keep the canister slap in the middle of the tank.

I've got plenty of extra hose on my Eheim 2028 so I can pull the filter out to service it. No kinks and it's fine. The only annoying thing about my 2028 was the flow check ball would rattle around in the little window. I removed it and now the filter is absolutely silent. Just be sure to get all the air out of it. I do this by tilting it a bit side to side after service.
If I didn't see water flow, I wouldn't know it was on.
ya i have my eheim tubes longs. small tank like mine if the tubes were straight it would have too much flow. i have the filter on the bottom left and its about 2 feet away.
hmm looks like something must be wrong with my setup then. When i had the intake on the right, spraybar on the left, and canister in the center.
The 2026 would run, but makes those odd splash noises, and you could see in the intake hose going to the canister the water isnt going down full. It's like when you are at the end of a vacuum, and water going thru the hose in chunks.
Going to buy some new hoses and try again. thanks guys
I believe it's best to have them both at one end, I feel that this way the water is going in a circular motion. Water is drawn in at the bottom and pushed away at the top. Makes the plumbing easier and neater too.
I have a 2026 in mine and don't use the spray bar, I have outlet going into an external heater then stepped down to 12mm pipe, this comes into the tank at the back corner slightly faced towards the side glass.
IMHO having them at different ends can mean that filtered water is pushed towards the intake.
I have my intake at the center of the tank, and outlet spraybar on one end.
I always figured out the water flow would work out somehow... seems to be plenty of current in the tank to get all the water through the filter eventually!
