The intake side of my eheim has a u-tube that curls nicely over the side of my tank. The output side however, does not. You have to bend the tubing over the side , and I don't like how it crimps the hose slightly. Does ehiem, or anybody make a u-tube like the intake for the output?

That Pet Place sells 'em. You can buy something called a 'wide jet return' for the Eheim tubing that has the bend to hang on the tank edge. If you want to use the spray bar with this, just cut off the 'wide jet' part and attach a spray bar. I've done that on a number of tanks and it works well. Beats kinky hoses!

To find this part, go to That Pet Place's web site ( http://www.thatpetplace.com ) and do a search for "wide jet". You'll get the listing for the jet return for the 400394 tubing. If you click on the "More Info" button, it will return a screen that also lists the wide jet return for the 400494 tubing.

These things are easily worth the $5 or $7 they cost.

I use both, actually. I use the spray bar mostly if I want to reduce the current (many of my tanks are obscenely overfiltered), but about half use the wide jet.

Sorry to keep bothering you Jim. But since it sounds like you know what you're doing... I found an "oxygen diffuser" and a "surface extractor" in a catalog and was wondering if you had used either and what you think. I really like the surface extractor, but I feed a lot of floating pellets. So would I drop them in on the other side and hope they get eaten quickly? Anyway, if you have any info on either of these products I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

It's no bother... that's why we're here, to help each other out.

I've never really seen a need for either diffusers or surface extractors... my tanks don't generally get to much of a film on the surface, and if they do, it tends to be temporary. (Also, I use my canisters mostly for biofiltration, so I don't necessarily want unfiltered water going into the canisters; I have separate filters for mech filtration.) I'm not sure what the point of an 'oxygen diffuser' is. It seems that if you have enough surface disruption, you'd get good gas exchange naturally. Maybe good for people that do CO2 injection? I don't really know...

I have several of the surface extractors (SSE), but only one installed at the moment. If I have a tank that routinely develops a surface film, I'll install one and use it actively only as required (normally less than an hour of surface extraction per day is generous). But they do require a bit of DIY to be able to prefilter the regular intake for non-surface skimming operation (my canisters are all prefiltered bio-only similar to Jim's). There is a separate control for the surface skimming portion of the device.

The SSE is very prone to clogging if there is any plant debris generated in the tank, or small floating plants (duckweed, etc.) or snails. It is also a bit demanding of a relatively constant water level in the tank- it does autocompensate a bit, but not as much as you might like. The on/off control for the device can interfere with a cover glass as well, depending actually on the tank size (smaller tanks with narrow trim are a more likely problem, large tanks rarely). But for intermittant use, it can fill a need.
