I have never in my life owned any type of canister filter, I have only owned power filters, and undergravel. The 55g tank I'm picking up in 6 hours has a Eheim Canister Filter on it, I know Eheim are great filters, but please give me some information on these things. Are they self priming? If not, how do I prime it? Do I have to buy the Eheim carbon sponges? Can I just use my carbon tie bags that fit into all of my other filters? What all should be used in it, i.e. carbon pads, filter pads, etc....?

I know I sound like an idiot, but we all start somewhere, sometime, with new products.

what kind of eheim is it? cant answer any of the questions you asked without knowing the model.

you purchased an unknown filter??? lol
kinda like christmas then.

I have an eco, and they are NOT self priming. Dont plug in the filter yet, and what I do to get it started is get tank water and place it in canister. Then while it is still off suck on the tubing leading up to the spray bar. When water is in there, turn it on and it should work.

There is something important tho.

Eheims intakes are on the BOTTOM of the cannister, and the water rises up thru the media and out the top.

Hope this helps! :)

Well i dont know about the eco, but all i have to do to prime my 2213 is to pull the tube off the top (with the included disconnects) and suck.... once the syphon starts, i plug the tube back in, plug in the filter, and watch it fill.

Ecco and classic are two different things?! :wall:

I have 2215 and thats how I start mine.
