Eheim (Canister) Issue

For some reason it looks like the outtake pump is pumping out water faster than the intake is taking water in, resulting in air building up in the canister (similar to injecting CO2 in the canister, but this time it's just regular air) and then being expelled all at once. I'm not quite sure what to do because I'm not quite too sure if the problem I think it is is physically possible. Somehow it'd seem like the siphon would be just as strong as the pump, as the pump determines how much water is moving through the line. It also seems impossible because I'm not too sure where the air is coming from that it's expelling considering a canister is pretty much a vacuum. I still have no clue

You might try doing a full service on the filter. Tear it down, clean the impeller, rinse your media in used tank water add some new pads, etc.

Put it back in place, start it up and rock it back and forth until the noise is gone. You're correct in thinking the output controls the input as the input is essentially a siphon. My thoughts are if the media were blocking passage of the water through the filter media, the impeller may cavitate. A service would surely correct this.

post what model it is.

my 2227 wet dry has a "snorkel" that allows air into the canister so it can and does have a different flow rate of the inflow and outflow. If yours is just a straight canister than perhaps the intake is blocked, and the impeller is pulling air threw one of the gaskets. I would think that this would give you some type of noise, I'm not sure.

I would do this:

disconnect the intake, and outtake hoses and fully inspect them, make sure there are no kinks, or anything blocking. be sure to check out the valves

look at the canister itself, be sure water can flow freely everywhere

check out your impeller and be sure that it is not fouled.

I would bet that the filter is running for 30 min or so with a blocked intake, eventually enough of a vacuum builds to suck air through a loose "O" ring somewhere and then you get that fizzing "carbonation" noise as air gets into the canister and is shot into your tank.

I still use a sponge over my intake and every 10 days or so if i don't clean it i have the same thing happen (except the air comes down the "snorkel") until i clean off the intake sponge. I have had a fish get into the intake when the sponge fell off and the same thing happened but was much harder to find.

take a Pict of your filter, and how you have the hoses going into the tank, someone may be able to see what is wrong right away.
