Eheim ECCO filters

I asked this question before in DIY and equipment, but got no reply... so I'll try here =P

Anyone have any experiences with the ECCO line of canisters? I need a realiable canister for my 20 gallon bowfront (comes out to be about 26 gallons I think), but I can't go over budget... I like Eheim's canisters, so I wanna stick with this brand. Does anyone know what the flowrate of the 2231 and the 2233 are?

I have a 2233, and it is essentially the same thing as the classic 2213. 440 liters/hour, 116gal/hour. The ecco is better designed, I like the side by side intake/outtake valves and the priming function is pretty cool. The basket arrangement is pretty nice, but it's not an outstanding mechanical filter. I think the classic is hard to beat for it's simplicity.

im currently running both(2233 and 2231) of these filters on my 55g. im new to the hobby and these are the only filters ive used(other than a penguin bio-mini and eheim liberty on smaller 10g tanks), so i cant really compare them to anything else. im very satisfied with them. theyre easy to maintain and super quiet. you wouldnt know they were on at all if you didnt see the water moving. here's the info from the box:

ecco 2231 - 127 U.S. gal/hour
ecco 2233 - 145 U.S. gal/hour

hope this helps out some. if there's any other specs i can find out for you just ask.
 
I have the medium echo in my 40 hex, the only thing I dont like about it is the water doesn't break the surface tension at all when it is goin back in the tank, the water looks almost stagnant and I dont wanna have to break down and by an air pump
 
I'm probably gonna end up getting the 2235. Just looking at the flowrates from the other filters, I figure this one should have enough for a 20 gallon bowfront. Not having the filter break the surface of the water is fine for me... its going to be a plant tank with a really light bioload (thinking one dwarf gourami and probably a couple other really small fish).

At one point (when I was playing with an idea to try Ecco), I had a chance to read a long discussion regarding Ecco filters. There were a lot of people participating in the discussion, and many of them had very decent experience with many Eheim canisters prior to buying Ecco.

From this and some other discussions I got an impression that Ecco behaved like a cheap plastic toy (although the overall design and features were well intended). The majority if the users would suggest Eheim Classic over Ecco.

This stopped me from purchasing the filter, and I hope that the info may be helpful to you.

That indeed is interesting to hear... what classic filter would you suggest for a 20 gallon bowfront? If I remember correctly they aren't self-priming... how hard is it to get water going through that filter? I'm rather lazy, and don't like to put more effort into something than is necessary =\
Oh.. I noticed that Big Al's still sells the Professional canisters... those are self priming right?

I would suggest a classic 2213. They are easy to prime. When you set it up the first time all you have to do is suck on the hose to get it to start filling the canister with water. After the first time you simply shut off the filter, close the shut off valves, reconnect after servicing, open the valves , wait for the water to fill the canister again, turn on the filter and your done.
