Eheim Jager questions

I just bought a few Eheim Jagers to replace Marineland Stealths and Stealth Pros that I want out of the tanks (you know ... the recall and my having no interest in being one of the unlucky ones with a blown out tank). Three quick questions for those of you who know the Jagers well:

The guy at the pet store said they could indeed be mounted horizontally near the bottom, or at least on a severe angle so as not to be out of the water even if a 50% WC was done. But the instructions (such as they are) that came with it said it should be mounted vertically. So can I indeed mount it horizontally or on an angle or is there some reason it has to stay truly vertical?

In just one of my tanks, I *have* to mount it truly vertically. I will of course unplug it before any WCs. Is this a problem or does it have to *always* stay underwater even when unplugged during WCs?

Lastly, half of what I read online said it was a *partially* submersible heater that had to have a small bit up and out of the water. But the box and "instructions" as well as the pet shop guy said that no, it is indeed FULLY submersible. I suspect that's true as it says it all over the box, but to be sure I'm not missing something obvious, just want to double check that it can indeed be put 100% underwater?

Thanks ahead of time!

:thm: "Eheim Jaegers" - Did not know that Eheim manufactures Jaeger heaters - or did I misunderstand and you meant two different manufacturers - Eheim + Jaeger?

In two of my 55fers, I placed the submersible heaters (sorry, cannot stand up to check brand-name) near the bottom of the tank and so far have no problems. I wanted to hide heaters and cords, and that was the best way of doing it. Around the green electric cords I placed som Javaferns which makes all blend together. :)

Yup - the boxes say Eheim Jager Trutemp. I'm figuring it's okay to put them horizontally too, but would love to get a definite from someone who has these heaters? Cannot get in touch with the company and they have yet to answer email. Plus the other questions above - anyone out there with them know?

I have 2 of the Ehiem Jager heaters. One in a 10 gallon and another in a 40 gallon. The 10 gallon one is horizontal near the bottom, the 40 gallon is in the middle of the tank on a slant (Grow out tank). Both are fully submerged and I have never had an issue in almost 2 years I have used them. both tanks seem to be spot on as far as temps go too. Hope this helps.

Great! Thank you so much! I'll switch them out tonight, then, and pull the worrying Stealths. Thank you!

Saje, I've got a few of these heaters and run them all completely submersible. I do unplug the heaters 15 minutes prior to a water change if the heater will be exposed to the air at all.

In the safety instructions section, it clearly states that there is a risk of overheating: water level must never be below the minimum mark (3) on the housing AND the maximum immersion depth of 0.5m or 19.68 inches.

I'm sure this means overheating of the heater itself. As long as their is good water flow around the heater, installing it on an angle should be fine. I think the problem when hiding the heater behind any 'hard' decor is that it reduces water flow around the heater, possibly causing a heater malfunction.

Sigrid, yes Eheim is/has been involved with the Jager brand heaters for a few years now.

dudley, thanks.
I really did not know that even though I own a number of Eheim filters. Are the heaters American-made to deal with the different electric voltage and frequency?

Will be viewing Eheim heaters on the internet.

They are made in Germany. They are available in 230-240V and 120V models.
