eheim on a 20 gal too much?

I am setting up a 20 gal. planted tank. I have a spare eheim (2217, I think) and a Penguin (110 or 125) that I can use as filtration. I would rather not use the Penguin because of surface agitation and CO2, but am concerned the eheim would be overkill and possibly too much flow for the tank. What do you think?
 
I think I also have an Emperor 280 lying around that I could use, but that also seems like it would be overkill.

I have another 20 gal that I will set up later as saltwater, and would like to use one of the filters on that. I am leaning towards the eheim on the planted and the Penguin on the marine, but I would love to hear other opinions.
 
What's the flow rate on the Eheim 2217?
I have a ViaAqua 265gph on a tall 20g plant tank. The flow is diminished as it has a spray bar I mounted vertically..... instead of a single output. Plus, it has valves at the top of the cannister so I can turn down the flow when using a U/V sterilizer.
 
The 2217 is 1000l/h, which is just about 264 g/h. It would also have a spray bar. That works well for you in your 20? The water flow doesn't seem too crazy?

I run an Eheim 2213 as well as a AC200 on my 10 gallon planted and havent had too many issues. I'd prefer less flow surface agitation but overall I've been able to keep plants for years with this setup.
 
Wow--I don't know about the AC200, but the eheim 2213 is over 100 gph. What is the output on the AC200? Do you use spray bars?
