In a 65 gal. aquarium with plastic plants, how often should I change the 2 pads in the filter? Also, how often should I rinse/change the media?
Tank is well stocked and 2 years old. I have changed the filters before, just wondered how often.

As long as you are not overstocked or as long as flow doesn't drastically decrease, Eheim suggests cleaning filter media every 3 to 6 months, but do not disturb the biological media except to replace 1/3 every 6 months. You can then bleach and thoroughly rinse the EHFIsubstrate and use it again in future "replacements".

I find that the filter actually works and filters better after about a month from cleaning time! I use the ECCO 2233, and that's all I can comment on. I do use EHFIsubstrate PRO along with 2 coarse and 2 fine filter pads as my standard setup. I use carbon and micron pads only as needed.

Ehfisubstrat cannot be effectively cleaned by the hobbyist. After the internal pores are clogged, it is a rock, exterior surface only.
