Do I ever need to replace the substrate in my ehiem filter, those 'little rock like things' that make up the bio filter and the 'little white hollow things' that go before the first filter pad? I've been using the same ones for the last 2 years and never had any problems with my parameters. I just rinse them out with aquarium water whenever I go in there. They do look a little stained however. i'm sure the manufacture recomends replacing them, but is that just to boost sales?

that stuff is very pourous which is why it works so good. all the holes and stuff inside can get clogged leaving only the outside to colonize bacteria. it would work better if replaced every once in a while; a little at a time but since your water is fine i wouldnt change it.

I use the rings as bio filter media because it is not porus and does not collect and "lclog up" with build up and they work great, I hardley ever clean them. The bio media your using is good as well though.
