Electric Blue Hap Questions

I have a few questions about these fish. In a month or so I will be getting a 55 gallon (using it to hold fish while I move my 110 gallon, after which it will be empty). Will this be big enough for 1 electric blue male and 2 females? I imagine that there will be a large center piece of holy rock, but thats about it.

Will there be lots of harassment between the fish? I've never kept Africans before. Also, will a pH of about 7.8 be okay? My water is moderately hard, will I need to add minerals to the water?

Thanks

What size are they? The fish are like people with great range of aggressiveness. Three inch or less should be ok.

I would buy all of the rocks youa re goignt o use in 110 and put them in the 50G. :)

From what I have read, Haps get to be about 6 inches. I was thinking that with only 1 male with 2 females, there would not be much harasmment, or protecting of territory. These would be the only fish in there.

I could get more rock as well.

Any other opinions.

Thanks

I would consider a 75 the minimum tank size for those fish. They like to swim and a 55 just doesn't have enough depth (front to back) for fish that hit 6" or more.

I think they should be ok, I once had my spilinotus trio which were 8 inches each in the 60 gal. by themselves and they bred like crazy. I say give it a try.

Yeah, I was getting varying info on minimum tank size, one even said 30 gallons. Who knows, maybe I could go larger, but I doubt it.

Also, are there any smaller Africans that have that bright blue color like the electric blue males? Perhaps I could go with a trio of those (Scientific names please so that I can look them up on the internet).

Thanks

Electric blue ahlis?
I've heard those things can get like 8" long!

I, too, was looking for something to contrast with my yellow labs, and I wanted to go blue.
I was looking at the electric blue ahlis, but they were too big.
I think they are a little too aggressive for the yellow labs, but one site said they would coexist "ok".

I started to look for other alternative blue cichlids...

I really like this site:
http://www.wetpetz.com/elecyellow.htm

Psuedotropheus zebra blue / Metriaclima callainos
P. scolofi (scolifi?)
Blue dolphin (Cyrtocara moorii)

I ended up with a bunch of P. zebra blue, which get about the same size and supposed to be pretty tame.

I think Pseudotropheus scolofi are a pretty good choice. I personally wouldn't put zebras in a 55... you might get away with it, but zebras can be pretty boisterous.

Ps. demasoni are fiesty blue fish; you need to have a good sized colony (i.e., a dozen or more), but if you do, they are interesting fish and they get along OK with yellow labs. Makes for a pretty tank.

Oh duh, those other electric blues... :)
Sorry, my brain was not quite working when I typed the first reply.

The regular electric blues have very pale females.
The coloration in the males are pretty intense though.
The different coloration kinda eliminated them as an option.

I think it's the same for the P. scolofi's.
Females are not as intense coloring.

This is why I went with the M. callainos.
The coloring are supposed to be about the same for male and females. :)
