Electric Blue Jack Dempsey's worthless?

i have a ebjd and yes i have had some big trouble with him byt its worth it. they are an awsome fish such good personality. he does freak out sometimes but i guess thats just the fish. dont give up they are a cool fish

There is always Hope!!!

I purchased two 1.25" EBJD's back in december of 06. Both of them died within a few months, stopped eating and acting weird. This deterred me for a little while. Then in April of this year i ordered two 3.5" specimens from Jeff Rapps. They are now 4-4.5" and I have had no problems with them, except for fighting between each other, both are male.

I have a 6" Male EBJD and he's fine no major problems. When I first got him he wouldnt eat any thing I put in the tank, then after a couple of days he was fine and now he east everything I put into the tank. I don't think theyre worthless fish, just not to much is known about them in the hobby.

I have 4 EBJD. I purchased 2 about 3 months ago, and they're doing fine. They are in a 47Bow, with 3 zebra loaches, 1 Gold Gourami, 1 Rainbow shark, 1 Bristlenose Pleco and plenty plants, snails. Filtration is a Eheim 3028 with prefilter, UV sterilizer and a sponge filter. One EBJD is a bit skittish, but growing fine, the other has grown over 1/2 in the 2 months. He's a bit aggressive, hungry, with almost no tan background, almost all blue. The other two I picked up last night. They are beasts! Hungry, active, curious all over my tank. That tank is also 40G, but a breeder. Exact same filtration. That tank has a Gold Gourami, 5 Tiger Barbs, 1 Bristlenose Pleco, 2 Julii Cory, 1 Zebra Loach I saved from a terrible keeper (anyone wanna trade), and 2 Round Banded Barbs. Yes, it's a bit full, new tank being set up. But anyway, I think part of my success with my first 2 is the filtration of course, but the diet. I can’t recall the name, but I have this fish food, made for small fish, that contains anti-parasite with it, and I use it as a treat, but EVERY fish goes crazy for it. I read about the EBJD, and heard both sides of the fence. It does not matter to me if they're Hybrids or morphs. It only makes a difference in their treatment I guess. I would encourage anyone who likes these to NOT give up! Just move very slowly. The Breeding part, leave that to those with money. Most EBJD is male. Maybe every 20th or so is a female and of those, most only give birth to males. On top of that, of the 50 fry, only 8 might be an EBJD. See the numbers? Anyway, don’t give up. Just my 2 cents.

Would it be wise to "grow out" these fish? I think they might be easier to maintain and watch in a smaller environment, but maybe that's just me.

If so, what is a recommended starting point? 30g?

Well I am giving them a try. I just got a few from a farm in Florida. We will see? They are in a 55g right now. Just them and the clean up guys. I am gona move them to a 75 in a few months and see if I cant get them to grow a bit. What is this medicated food you spoke off? I would like to try that.

I would love to own an EBJD but hear in the uk they are evry exspensive, about £100 a young pair. Iv seen three for 120 somewhere anyway. Could you try only using RO water in there tanks? This is used for other species which have been bred an bred for there looks and not there strengths. I know this will not stop the genetics from kicking in but could be used to prevent infection and parasites. Also i would avoid feeding live for obvious reasons!

I use 100% RO in all my tanks. I am not sure if that would help prevent parasites? My little guys are doing great so far but its just bin a few days.

EBJD ,beautiful fish which dies just as soon as you get used to having it.Great money makers. If they could only infest all our popular fish with paracites and recessive genes the fish industry would thrive..$ $ $ all about the Dollar

Well thasts dissapointing. Time will tell? SO far SO good?
