I have heard these guys dont achieve the same size and temperament as their non-hybrid brethren. Is this true? Is it conceivable to house one in a 30g tank with a few larger tetras?
Currently the EBJD is 1.5 inches......tank will be fully planted with a couple larger tetras and a smaller pleco

Thoughts, advice, criticisms all welcome.

I believe they do grow to around 12", but most never develop an aggression near the level of the normal jacks. (mine is still only about 5.5-6")

The golden rule still applies with them: Anything small enough to fit in their mouth, will end up there.

If you're talking Congo tetras, it might be possible, but I've never tried it. It's worth a shot.

I would use at least a 55 gal.
 
if your looking for a fish that stays around a size manageable for a 20 gallon high, yuou could get a green terror. they get to be roughly 8-10". i know; my friend has got one in a 20 high and hes about 8" long. he keeps it with a pleaco and a clown loach i believe. fish has got plenty of room in it, although he does want to upgrade to a 30 long. convicts, firemouths, and festivums are options too- they all get to be a max of around 6" tops.

all of those fish get way to large for a 20 gallon high. 8-10 inches is far to large. at least a 55 gallon is needed. clown loaches need to be kept in groups of at least 5, and they get to 12" long, calling for a tank of at least 180 gallons. the plaeco is probably a common, which get to over 2 feet, another fish that is way to big for a 20 gallon.

EBJDs need at least 55 gallons, just like any other JD.

BTW, they arent hybrids, just a recessive gene.
 
Most people who keep them say they do stay smaller , 8-10 inches, and are less aggressive.

wow- im really getting ballyhooed for that. well, thats what my friend does. i personally have kept 5" convict, their max size, in a 20 gallon high and they were long lived and grew quite well. my friend though really loves that fish. he does a 10-20% water change every other day religiously. i just hope he gets a bigger tank for the fish cause the only issue is that the terror lacks a good turning radius in the tank. but other than that the fish is not stunted, it is virtually fully grown, its like 4 years old now. but still, i can see where it might seem cruel to keep the fish, seemingly so big, in a 20 gallon tank.
