Does anyone know anything about elephant nose fish. My 3 year old told me the other day that he had a dream about an elephant fish, so just out of curosity, I looked it up on Google, and found something about an elephant nose fish, but it didn't have alot of info on it, just some pics. What size tank do they need, and how big do they get? I would love to be able to get him one.

In my opinion, this fish is not for beginners. Also, they are delicate and nocturnal. You will be lucky to even get a good glimpse at them during the day. To be able to really see them being active you need a lunar light setup.

A friend of mine has a whole tank full of them, I was surprised to see them schooling in the middle of the day after reading all the info that says otherwise. Really cute fish too!

do Elephant nose fish need to be kept in groups?

Hi There,

I've had an Elephant nose fish for about 4 months now. He's wonderful!! :dance
They grow to about 9" or 10" but based on the one that I have they don't seem to grow too quickly...he's about 3" right now.
They do better if keep singly...one per tank and a min. of a 45 gal tank.
I feed my little guy frozen bloodworms, brineshrimp and have seen him pick at flakes every now and then.
At first he was very shy and stayed hidden until lights out, but once he got used to his surroundings and tank mates he's become very outgoing. He is always out during the day looking for food and exploring and doesn't even swim away when someone gets close to the tank.
I agree with 1tankneverenuff that these fish are not for beginners. They like very clean water and don't take very well to change (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite level fluctuations.) They require a stable tank environment with peaceful tankmates.
If you do enough research and have the ideal setup for these guys then they are worth having. I love mine! :)
Good luck with everything and keep us posted if you get one or have any other questions.

hello just more questions.. you said They require a stable tank environment with peaceful tankmates.

can they go in a community tank ? just curious. I have been wanting 1 of them and doing away with the community fish. But dont no what can go in with the elephant nose

Weird coincidence! I was at my LPS yesterday, and they had one of those. They just received the shipment. So they didn't have any name tags up yet, and I was curious as to what type of fish it was. Now I know.

When I was a kid we had 2 elephant nose fish in a row jump out of our 55 gallon. :( We sealed the hood the best we could, but they just wanted to be out. Not sure if they're jumpers in general, or we just had bad luck. Quite traumatizing for a kid (I was the one that found them)! But an awesome fish, I'd like to have one again someday.
