Hi There,

I've had an Elephant nose fish for about 4 months now. He's wonderful!! :dance
They grow to about 9" or 10" but based on the one that I have they don't seem to grow too quickly...he's about 3" right now.
They do better if keep singly...one per tank and a min. of a 45 gal tank.
I feed my little guy frozen bloodworms, brineshrimp and have seen him pick at flakes every now and then.
At first he was very shy and stayed hidden until lights out, but once he got used to his surroundings and tank mates he's become very outgoing. He is always out during the day looking for food and exploring and doesn't even swim away when someone gets close to the tank.
I agree with 1tankneverenuff that these fish are not for beginners. They like very clean water and don't take very well to change (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite level fluctuations.) They require a stable tank environment with peaceful tankmates.
If you do enough research and have the ideal setup for these guys then they are worth having. I love mine! :)
Good luck with everything and keep us posted if you get one or have any other questions.

i have to say you have done a great job observing and learning about your fish :)

their mouth is actually ABOVE the long nose thing. its pretty cool watching them eat.

I saw an article on them in one of aquarium magazine years ago. One thing mentioned in the article that really attracted me: since elephant nose are mildly electric fish they will spend hours playing with a small balled up piece of aluminum foil.

I never got one, not having the correct conditions, so I never learned if they will indeed play with aluminum foil. If you have one, give it a try and let us know.

got one from someone who took down their tank. it was such a pain drove me nuts until the day it died i would spot feed it all the time and never see it eat. i kept it for a good 9 months i redid my 120 added some better hiding spots and it never came out again. finally i guess it died from not eating. was very big. what 7-8 inch its been some time now.
