They are both great filters, neither is really better than the other, it is just a matter of personal preference. Holly is right, no filter will take it all out on contact, but it can help greatly, especially if you use activated carbon. Frequent water changes are the best way to rid your tank of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
