Does anyone here use Elodea in their tropical tanks?

The girl at the fish shop recommened we use it so the fish can also munch on it, but we are finding its dieing really quickly and keeps breaking off and floating on the top.

Is it a good plant to use, or should I swap?

It also must of had some snail eggs on it because we have 3 newly hatched snails...

Elodea, also known as Anacharis, is good plant to have in your tank simply because of the fact that it absorbs nutrients and chemicals in your water column, helping to keep them at a steady level

Does your tank have any type of light? this particular plant is reguarded as a low light type, but it'll still need some.
It's a relatively undemanding plant, so i think light is the most important factor for it to survive.

Yes I have a 24 inch reflector light which is on most of the day.

What's the wattage of your lighting & size of your tank? How deep is the tank?

I haven't had anacharis break off on me. With low lighting, the leaves tend to disintegrate and all you're left with is the stem. Oh, and you're gonna get snails no matter what...I hate them.

Elodea/anacharis is usually a very hardy plant under the right conditions, so I suspect yours may not be getting enough light. IME this plant needs at least 2 watts-per-gallon of light to do well, so if you don't have that much light over your tank you would do well to float the plant near the surface so it's close to the light.

Nice plant, just be sure you have pressurized CO2 or DIY for your carbon source, as it melts with Excel use.
