Embarrassing update...

Thanks for the advice! These are black moors (not comets or anything) so not sure if they will be safe with WCMM forever but it has worked well for a few months now. I have the same 11 (one jumped out during feeding and became carpet jerky :( ) that I've had since October, and that was in a 29 gallon tank. They are lovely in the 55, I'd like to get another five or so, but am watching them closely as the black moors get bigger.

Before I resort to scrubbing, I'm going to try that silicate absorbing resin idea. One reason I don't want to scrub is that I can actually see green algae growing in with the diatoms, and I'd love to have some green algae to soften the white rocks :)

I'll let everyone know how it works out, I'll probably try the Chemi-Pure Elite first.

On a side note, anyone have any Najas grass they can spare? I'm thinking maybe just maybe it is goldfish safe...

I u live near philli then u can have my black moor if u want it.

I don't even know if that counts as a moderate diatom bloom LOL. When I setup my 150 (used Acrylic too!), I had diatoms like you would not believe. Everyday I was in there with a toothbrush scrubbing every leaf and every rock, in a heavily planted tank, followed by a large water change. I went on vacation for a week, and when I came home they were so thick the tank was BLACK. literally. I cried.

For months, I started using phospurus absorbing filter media. That totally helped. I still had them, but not as much. The phosguard and whatnot really do work though.

Really? Because it just looks terrible to me...I've never had it this bad! But then again, I've always been able to take a couple of otos from the 55 and then put them back in with their buddies when things were all cleaned up :)

I know it's just a matter of waiting for things to balance out, and I see the green algae trying to break through, but it's just annoying...every day it gets a little thicker, I hope it's an "always darkest before the dawn" thing!

Maybe I will switch to PhosGuard period and not get the Chemi-Pure Elite. Thanks for the tip, and really sorry you had to go through that! Do you have room for an SAE? (Even though I know it's unwise to get a fish to solve a problem...)

BTW FishFriend, thanks - but I live in Florida. :) Maybe I will change my profile to reflect that, come to think of it.
