Are these schooling fish, and if so how many should be in a group for maximum happiness?

Yes, they are definitely schooling fish; I would start with no less than 6. I have them in 2 tanks, and love them!!! Just make sure your substrate is smooth; if their barbels (whiskers) get worn by sharp gravel etc., they will be very uncomfortable and might possibly die. :dance2:

I agree ^^. And make sure the tank is big enough, as these guys can grow to a good 4 inches.

They can do just fine in groups of three.

There is really no magic number, but the more the merrier and I would definately do no less than 3...
