EMERG: UnID'd fish-possible attacker

You're on the right track as a fishkeeper; it's very responsible of you, keeping your tank from being overstocked. Don't worry about the Melafix, just keep up the daily water changes. Clean water, pure water, that's the best thing you can do for your little fish to help her recover.

A good conditioner is Prime, if you can get it, but do be sure to dechlorinate and remove chloramines, and try to have the replacement water as close to the temp of the tank as possible. Really, a variance of more than two degrees can be very harmful, and I always try to get within a degree.

What kind of antispetic did you add? Something from the fish store?
Don't worry about making the tank too dark, just subdued lighting if you can.

Do another big water change in the morning or as early as you can, and keep that up daily if possible.

I can tell you deeply care for your fish and want to take good care of them, and you are doing a good job. Keep your chin up, and keep up the good work. :)

Keep an eye on the guppy for any changes, fuzz or cottony stuff on the fins or body.
Just to watch for infection. Let us know right away if you see anything like that.

My little Oto did have a bit of whiteness on the fin edges that were damaged, but not anything that looked poofy, or cottony. Don't worry, I'm just wanting to let you know that a bit of whiteness on the fins, where they were nipped off, can mean healing, but anything that has a lumpiness or fuzziness needs to be reported.

"morph" just means "form". It's a blue morph of P. lombardi. So he's perhaps three quarters right.

It isn't a morph. Lombardoi are sexually dimorphic. Juveniles and females are blue, males turn yellow as they reach maturity.

One lesson to be learned here is that you take most,(and I say most because not all are like that) pet store advice with a grain of salt. In time and with some experience, you'll be able to tell who is being honest and who is handing you some BS just to get a sale. Just do alot of research and ask questions about any unsure move you make before you do it.

I was unable to come online yesterday. The guppy mentioned earlier died. I guess it was just too badly damaged, its entire tail fin was gone, with most of the other fins missing too.

I do not use tap water, i use water from a well. So i believe i do not have to use a conditioner.

I do not use any temperature control in the tank, but the room temperature remains a constant 28-29 C so the water temp. should be proportionaly constant. I keep the replacement water next to the tank for some time.

Yes, the anti-septic is from the fish store. Its called "Aqua Safe", but the active ingredients are not mentioned.

Thank you all again. And i have 1 more problem. Its a long story and since its unrelated and this topic is settled ill start a new thread. Here is the link: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218324
