EMERGENCY! Strange growth on neon tetra

I just got a chance to check on the poor neon and it seems it died overnight:cry:.

I am watching the other neons closely for any similar symptoms.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Be sure to keep their water pristine. Watch for behavioral changes, which may be the first signs of illness.

I hope the others will be OK. Keep us posted.

Quick update.

I have not seen any of the other neons show similar symptoms but I will continue to observe them.

The neons seem to be acting the same, schooling/shoaling, swimming around, and they are still eating normally.

One neon has shredded fins but I do not believe it is related to whatever the neon with the growth had because the neon with the growth did not have shredded fins. But I will watch the neon with the shredded fins extra closely.

Shredded fins can be a water quality issue, and often there's bacterial involvement. Keep their water absolutely pristine. I mean water changes ever day to keep ammonia, nitrite, and excessive dissolved organic compound out of the tank.

Don't leave uneaten food in the tank for more than a couple of hours.

I am a believer in using Melafix as a general tonic and soothing supplement where there is fin damage. It does have a mildly antibacterial effect, as well, though not a good choice where there is frank bacterial infection. Melafix can harm the biological filter if used for a prolonged period of time, however, so carefully monitor your params and keep the water pure and clean.

Update.

My neons are doing well and I still have not seen any of my neons display symptoms that are similar to what I was seeing with the neon with the growth.

I decided against using Melafix because of it's potential to harm the bio-filter. Instead I decided to see if the clean water helped and today I can't even tell which neon had the shredded fins:).

I am feeling optimistic about this whole issue. I am starting to think that maybe this whole tank is on the road to recovery.

All of the neons keep gathering in one corner of the tank and it looks like they are having some kind of meeting lol.

I'm so glad the fins are looking great and the Neons are OK. Watch their behavior, though, if they hang out too much in one corner.

Since they are all just hangin' out together, it's probably OK. I think it's usually when one isolates himself that there's a problem, so they probably are just having a meeting, lol.
