I have a humback puffer and I fed him 30 minutes ago. He now has a piece of shrimp hanging out of his right gill. He looks unconfritable. Should I catch him and take it out of his gills, or will that damage his gills. Help me

i guess if your able to catch him and pull out the shrimp, it won't damage his gill and he'll probably feel better if it looks like its bothering him. does the shrimp look loosely lodged?

here is a pic of it. It is the white spot behind his eye

wow if you can take it out that looks nasty

I got him out. He didn' like it muh, but he seems to be doing good.

augh! Be careful removing the puffer from the water, because it can cause them to puff in the air. Sucking in that much air is hard on them. With a larger puffer, though, you can "burp" them to get the air out.

I've had the same thing happen to my dwarf puffer, only it was a live blackworm. It was sticking out her right gill opening, moving and stuff. It looked like a disgusting parasite. She couldn't dislodge it for a few minutes and started hanging her head to one side like a dog with a sore ear. I chased her around with the net (I was planning on scooping her in a cup of water and then using my planting tongs to pull out the worm). But in the excitement, she was able to dislodge it and swallow it.

Unfortunately, it seems to happen to puffers a lot because they have a propensity to scarf their food. I was reassured on a puffer forum that there's nothing I can do to force them to eat slower, and that they are usually able to dislodge it on their own.

silly puffs :)

Ya I know that puffers can do this. I never removed him from the water. I just scooped him up and he is small enough now that I never took him out of the water. He looked nice and healthy and back to normal behavor this morning

some freshwater puffers are aggresive. This puffer is a tetraedon palembangensis and he is really agressive. I can not put any fish smaller than him in the tank or he will eat it. I do have one other fish in there and it is a bristle nose pleco., but he is the same size if not a little larger than the puffer. The puffer doesn't like him in there, but he can't do anything about it. He just sits there and eye's him down. The pleco is to fast and big for him to do anything to him. So far so good with the combo. But to answer your question about agressive puffers. Some are some aren't. Make sure you do research on one if you plan on getting one.
