Emily's Pond Build Log

LOL. Yeah, sounds cold and wet to me. :)

I really wanted to get the filter put together and running, but I need to get IN the pond for that, and even with the wet-suit, I'm not going in freezing temp water. Hopefully things will warm up again soon, and I can get that done. In the meantime, I don't think any mosquitoes will be laying eggs in it - too cold for that, but hopefully I'll get the water moving prior to any mosquitoes coming back out to play.

I am wondering if anyone knows if those mosquito dunk rings are fish-safe? Not that there are fish in the pond yet, but if I put those rings in for now and then take them out once the pond is running and I'm ready to put fish in, will the residue be a problem?

re: the dunk rings, i've never used them and can't seem to find out what the inert ingredients are.

they're claimed to be "safe for humans, pets, fish" but not for use in potable water. (well, these days anyone would be crazy not to put that last disclaimer on anything, so it probably doesn't mean anything) one review that i found said that it left the pond tasting salty.

i would suggest not worrying about the bugs and just get at least some of your fish into the pond as soon as is practical, which will probably be well before the mosquitoes start trying to breed.

Thanks. :) I couldn't find much info about them or their safety in a pond either. I am hoping to have the filter running well before the mosquito season starts, but the weather has been a problem the last few weeks, so I am hoping it will clear up in soon so I can get moving on that. I'd like to get it started with the cycle process so that i can get the fish in there as soon as I can. I am aiming to have fish in there by the end of March. Right now I only have two occupants to put in there, and they are teeny yet, but I will get more and will QT them once these first two are in.

I don't have a big enough QT tank other than the 40 gallon that these are in for a half-dozen young goldfish. Unless I can safely QT them in my 10 gallon for a month or two? Anybody know if the 10 gallon would be Ok for that? These would be young feeder goldfish from PetSmart (or a similar store) and young shubunkins as well, and following that I'd be QT'ing a dozen or so rosy reds, which I think would be OK in the 10 gal for a month or two... Thoughts there? I know they're packed like sardines in the pet store tanks, but those are also more heavily filtered. Thoughts there?

Thanks all. :)

Give your local vector control office a call to see if they will give you some free mosquito fish.

But again, where do I put the fish since the filter on the pond is not yet installed (and it's still frozen over - thicker now than before which makes no sense to me since the temp has been above 40)? And I also don't want them in with my two goldies until they've been properly QT'd. I know my goldies are healthy, but couldn't guarantee that for new fish yet. Would they be OK in a 10 gal for a couple of months of QT?

I'm still stuck on that - where should I QT these incoming fish as I bring them in to prepare for the pond? Is 10 gal sufficient? If so, for how many fish short-term? If only one or two, it will definitely take time to stock this pond. LOL

I wouldn't worry about QT in a pond. But if it makes you feel better. Mosquitofish will be fine in a 10 gallon tank with a sponge filter.
