Hi everyone.

I currently have an Emperor 400 running on my tank. I'm moving away from carbon after reading that it really is not necessary. I was planning on putting some fluval bio-max in the extra compartments that come with the Emperor. Instead of using the standard carbon inserts for the Emperor, can I remove those and just shove some filter floss in there? Thanks for the advice everyone. This is a great site!

That is what I do. You save a lot of money over time and still get great filtration just adding your own floss. The inner layer of floss takes a long time to degrade so it becomes a source of seeded media if you need to jump start another tank.

I use this stuff and only this stuff. it saves me a fortune, and I use it over and over. best stuff I have found to use and save tons of money.

CAre to share some more details granny?

I use either filter floss (polyfill pillow stuffing, really) or lava rock for biomedia.

First- floss is an awful bio media. A good bio media will have good flow through it but floss clogs fast.

Second, I tried using floss in the gray media containers years ago. It is a PITA to make fit well and it needs to be replaced almost weekly if you have a decent fish stock. I tried sponges cut to fit as well, but cleaning them weekly was a PITA.

What I eventually settled on was using the blue carts with the carbon removed. This can be done by cutting away a few of the slots at the bottom and shaking out the carbon or by peeling back a bit of the blue material at the top and shaking out the carbon.

Third, I rinse and reuse the carts until they litterally fall apart. Running 4 of them in my 400 I probably replace them twice a year.

Definitely ditch the carbon. For more information on carbon there is an article in my blog.

Biomax is not really useful at all with such a more efficient biological media already there (the Biowheels). I would prefer something like the foam from Fluval filters as a replacement for the cartridges. They are a very effective mechanical media and can be reused forever.

I use the stuff grannyfish posted. Rite size bonded filter pad. I don't know where they sell big rolls. Bought a six pack of it on line from drsfosterandsmith.

I bought this off ebay and it was the best investment I could have made. I got another roll last year and it lasted me 7 months, this time the roll was bigger and much thicker. this stuff is awsome, the water flow is amazing and my fish all of them are as healthy as can be, no losses and there active. I was getting the filter media that went with my back filters, but the cost oye, and they would fall apart! this stuff is truly a saving grace and I add this to all my tanks. I just take it out of the baskets, wash in the bucket, straighten it back out and put back in.
oh and thsi stuff... wow thick as can be!! but very ventiliated and water goes thru is wondefully.
