I have a 90 gallon freshwater tank with 6 med-lrg goldfish in them. I have the fluval 404 as my filttration system and i have not been very happy with it. First of all goldfish crap like crazy and need a lot of filtration and it is a pain in the *** cleaning the fluval system. I'm thinking about switching to getting the emperor power filter 400 perhaps getting two of them. Do you guys think this would be a good idea?? anybody experienced any problems with the emperor power 400?? how quiet is it?? any advice much appreciated. thanks. bzboy :bowing: :bowing: :bowing: :bowing:

The emp is probably my favorite HOB of all time, but whether or not it is better than a cannister in your application would be arbitrary. two emps would be good on the tank, two emps and a fluval would be better.

As far as the fluval, you may try a bit of easy customizing to keep the poop out of the cannister without detracting from it's ability. a sponge over the intake will pick up a good bit of the crap, and help the internal media last longer. the intake sponge is easy to change or rinse on a very frequent basis, and would allow you to remove a good bit of waste without opening your cannister. If you go with the EMP's I would still reccomend intake sponges with messy fish,

You couldn't pay me enough to use a emp 400 again. Altho it is very quiet it is a pain at times to get primed and to quiet down. Allso for a HOB filter the cleaning is kind of a pain. Alot of nooks and cranys and parts to remove to really get it cleaned really good. I just think for a HOB it should be easier. My Eheim classic canister is easier to clean. If you are wanting a easy cleaning operating filter check out the Aqua clear filters. They look kind of cheap but they work great are silent and easy to clean. And the best part no cartridges to replace, just rinse out the foam filter and reuse.. Just my 2 cents.

i think it works great and its easy to clean i just cant stand its noise, they all rattle bad after a while.

I've got several Emps that have been in service for 4 years or more, and none of them rattle when clean and primed correctly, except for maybe 4-5 minutes after turning them back on.

For a tank with messy fish, Emps are a good choice, especially if you ditch the Marineland cartridges and buy a couple of Aquaclear 500 foams. Cut the foams to length so they fill the media well when the sponges are laying horizontally. You'll get much better mech filtration that lasts forever. And you get the great biofiltration from the biowheels. And the quality of the Emp filters.
