I've got a 5gal hex. that I don't know what to do with. Any ideas? I could go fresh, brackish, or salt.

Definately a Freshwater setup with a Betta, a few Otto Cats, and some live plants.
Plants in that type of setup...
Anubias should do really good.
Also, if the hood is "Incandescent" then go to Wal-Mart & get the All-Glass CF to replace the incandecent bulb. They're about $5 and put out about 10 Watts.

I wanted opinions from freshwater people, figured they don't hang around the saltie section.

10w CF should give you enough light to make it heavily planted. Then add two or three different species of shrimp. Maybe a couple white clouds if you gotta have something with fins.
As much as I love apistos (as everyone knows
) i wouldn't do one in a 5g hex. I would do one in a standard 5g, but a hex just doesn't have enough of a footprint IMO.
