Endler with red flared gills

I have a couple female black bar endlers with red, flared gills. They almost look like the gill is coming out. Is this a disease? Old age?

All params normal. Ammonia 0.

I need to take fish photography lessons. I even put her in a specimen container.

Ammonia would be the first thing to look at but apparently it's not the issue, so gill flukes would be next in the line of suspects. How long have you had the fish and have you added anything to the tank recently?

I've had my endler herd for almost a year. Many generations. I recently moved so this tank has been set up for about a week. Yes, I cycled first. Only 2 of the 15 or so females has this. I had the same thing happen before I moved too, just didn't say anything. I just isolated her til she died 3 weeks later.

Although, I do need to get some new blood going. I haven't in a while. Could that be it?

Doubtful. I think you're dealing with a pathogen, just trying to figure out whether it's parasitic in nature. It doesn't appear to be.

I found my endlers dead in a similar fashion because I did not have proper aeration. Try that, if not they make fizzing parasite removing tablets which work well.
